The system understood the relationships.
What it hadn't done yet was answer the question Stewart actually cared about: What is likely to happen next?
This is where the next layer comes in: the Reasoning Layer.
From Relationships to Patterns
Context explains how things are related. Reasoning detects patterns across those relationships.
The system begins evaluating signals together: healthcare conferences scheduled across multiple cities, antimicrobial drinkware launches across suppliers, rising catalog searches in healthcare categories, historical spikes tied to similar events.
Individually, these signals are interesting. Together, they begin forming a pattern.
Stewart Stops Searching
For the first time in a long time, Stewart isn't hunting for information. The system is surfacing it. Not because it was told to: but because it recognized a pattern that matched historical behavior.
This is the difference between a search tool and a reasoning system. A search tool retrieves. A reasoning system anticipates.
The system isn't just saying "here's what happened." It's saying "here's what tends to happen when these conditions align."
Confidence and Conviction
But here's where it gets interesting: and where most systems stop short.
The Reasoning Layer doesn't just detect patterns. It evaluates them with two distinct lenses: confidence and conviction.
Confidence reflects how strongly the system believes the pattern is real. Conviction reflects how strongly the system believes action should be taken.
These are not the same thing. A system can be highly confident in a pattern and still have low conviction about acting on it: because the stakes are high, the data is thin, or the timing is wrong.
This distinction matters more than most teams realize. When you collapse confidence and conviction into a single score, you lose the nuance that separates good recommendations from dangerous ones.
What This Means for Product
If you're building systems that make recommendations: whether in sales, operations, logistics, or finance: the Reasoning Layer is where you earn or lose trust.
A system that surfaces patterns without communicating its confidence level will eventually be ignored. A system that communicates confidence without conviction will be over-relied upon. The goal is a system that helps humans make better decisions: not one that makes decisions for them.
Stewart doesn't need the system to tell him what to do. He needs the system to tell him what's worth paying attention to, and how sure it is.
That's the Reasoning Layer. And it's the foundation for everything that comes next.
What this looked like in my work

The reasoning layer I built translated those patterns into specific, actionable recommendations: which suppliers to prioritize, which product categories were trending, which affiliates were at risk of churning.
