The Story
NatureFirst was born from a simple frustration: identifying a plant or animal in the wild required juggling multiple apps, none of which talked to each other. The vision was a single, intelligent companion that could capture, identify, and contextualize any living thing you encounter: building a personal field journal as you go.
The Challenge
The nature discovery space was fragmented across dozens of single-purpose apps: one for birds, another for plants, another for insects. Users had to context-switch constantly, losing the flow of discovery. The challenge was to unify these experiences without overwhelming the user with complexity.
The Approach
Applied Human Centered Design principles to map the complete discovery journey: from the moment of spotting something interesting to the desire to learn more and share. Designed a capture-first flow where the AI does the heavy lifting, surfacing identification and context without requiring the user to know what they're looking at.
The Outcome
A clean, intuitive mobile experience that transforms any nature encounter into a learning moment. The AI identification layer removes the expertise barrier, making nature discovery accessible to casual observers and serious naturalists alike.
Features
Photograph any plant, animal, bird, or insect and receive instant AI-powered identification with confidence scores and alternative matches.
Beyond identification: habitat, range, behavior, conservation status, and seasonal patterns delivered in plain language.
Every capture is logged with GPS, date, and conditions, building a searchable personal record of your discoveries over time.
A single feed consolidating flora, fauna, fungi, and more: eliminating the need to switch between category-specific apps.
